29 July 2006 Dog survives heatwave ordeal
A dog who is unable to bark was rescued recently after enduring 26 days of hot weather trapped in a deep trench, without food or proper water. The collie, called Holly, took fright during a thunderstorm at the end of June and ran off, only to fall into a gully in the local churchyard, in Stoke Climsland, near Callington in Cornwall.
Holly, who fell ten feet into the narrow gully behind a building but was unable to bark for help, survived the heatwave by drinking rain water and licking moisture from the walls.
The 12-year-old mute canine, who had been reported missing weeks before, was eventually found when local church-goer, Will Sommerville, heard her whimpering.
"It was a big surprise," Mr Sommerville commented.
"I didn't even know there was a gap there. It is so narrow she could barely turn around. I'm just glad I found her."
Holly, who had eaten nothing for nearly a month, had lost half of her body weight and had to be treated for malnutrition, dehydration and an eye infection.
Holly's owner, Dennis Stephenson, said: "It is incredible she survived so long. I am really delighted she is all right."
