04 October 2006  Dog survives 400ft fall
While some pet owners will buy dog insurance in case of trips to the vet for common problems, it is unlikely that many would expect their pet to fall 400ft from a cliff - and survive.

This week, a Labrador named Jake did just that, falling from Huntcliff near Saltburn.

Jake's condition was described as being "safe and well" despite some injuries, though the owner himself suffered chest pains on the journey back up the cliff and was evacuated to hospital.

Paul Chapman, watch officer at Humber Maritime Coastguard Co-ordination Centre, said: "We would like to remind the public when walking their dogs along a cliff to always put their animals on a lead and if they do find themselves in any difficulty with the dog having gone over the cliff to ring 999 and ask for the coastguard."

Figures released last month by Datamonitor claimed that the cat and dog insurance market had increased from £252 million in 2004 to £295 million last year.
