07 September 2006 Dog saved by 'kiss of life'
A Dutch pet-owner may have raised some eyebrows filling out a dog insurance claim after a stranger gave their French Mastiff mouth-to-nose resuscitation following an accident. The 18-month-old pup had fallen from its owner's balcony in Zevenaar in the Netherlands and was spotted by passers-by later that evening.
With the dog's neck caught by its collar it had stopped breathing, but after some unusual assistance and a trip to the vets, it made a full recovery.
Paul Koetsier, police spokesman, said: "They tried heart massage but it didn't work. As I understand it, they closed its mouth and breathed through its nose".
Last year in the UK the Scottish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals rubbished claims that a number of dogs had committed suicide at a bridge in Dunbarton and urged owners to keep an eye on their pets.
While pet insurance can cover the veterinary bills in case of unfortunate accidents such as this, it's not possible to buy dog insurance to protect against depression as standard just yet.
