03 September 2005 Dog attacked by nutty squirrel
A pet dog is recovering after being badly injured by a squirrel. The unlikely scenario took place in Double Waters, Devon, where the Campbell family went on a picnic outing.
Their pet labrador Carl was chasing a squirrel in the woods but to his owners' dismay, the squirrel came out on top.
It jumped onto the dog, biting into its neck and clinging on for as long as 30 seconds before disappearing.
Carl was badly injured, and required surgery at a vet to stitch up the wound.
Owner Alison Campbell said: "Carl had this massive gash which was completely open, filthy and went to the muscle.
"We were absolutely frantic - there was blood everywhere. It was like a scene from a horror film."
Chris Jones, the vet who treated Carl, said: "I have only come across one or two squirrel bites but I have never seen a tear like this."
