12 January 2006 Diet pet food surge as pets shift post-Christmas pounds
Pets are being fed low calorie diets in an effort to shed their post-Christmas pounds, according to a leading retailer. Tesco reports that sales of reduced calorie cat and dog food have risen by 150 per cent since the new year.
"Brits are known as great animal lovers but sometimes our kindness towards our pets can do more harm than good," Tesco's senior food buyer Andrew Mulqueen told PetOwnersOnline.com.
"Unfortunately this happened over the Christmas period and, judging by the increased demand at our stores across the UK, there must be tens of thousands of pets on diets right now."
For those without pet insurance, the problems brought on by obesity in pets can result in large vet bills to deal with weight-connected problems such as arthritis, heart complaints and diabetes.
Research released last week by Halifax Pet Insurance found that more than a third of pet owners admitted their animals had gained weight over the Christmas period.
