06 September 2005 Dangerous centipede could be neighbour's pet
A venomous centipede that was found by a man in his living room could actually be a pet belonging to one of his neighbours. Aaron Balick, who lives in north London, found the nine-inch Scolopendra Gigantea, native to Central and South America, and handed it over to the Natural History Museum.
Mr Balick originally thought the sound coming from behind his TV might have been a mouse.
"The sound was coming from under some papers which I lifted, expecting to see the mouse scamper away," he said.
"Instead, I saw this prehistoric-looking animal skitter away behind a stack of books."
Mr Balick trapped the creature in a container, and left it there overnight, oblivious that it was such a dangerous species.
A neighbour, who collects exotic pets, has now come forward, claiming the venomous creepy-crawly belongs to him.
A spokeswoman for the museum told BBC News that the pet centipede would be returned to its rightful owner if checks made proved that he had indeed bought it from a local pet shop.
