20 August 2005 Couple splash out on new pet
A couple have forked out £4,000 on a new pet dog which they found whilst they were on holiday in the Azores. Nicola and Jonathan Cooksley were trekking near a volcano in Sao Miguel when they noticed that a dog had tagged along for the walk.
Despite the fact that the dog was in a terrible way, he followed the couple for eight hours over treacherous terrain.
The couple grew so attached to the dog that they called him Mears, after the television survival expert Ray Mears, and decided to have him flown home to Dorset from Lisbon.
The dog is now in quarantine for the next six months, and Mrs Cooksley regularly makes the 30-mile trip to visit him.
Having spent £4,000 on vet bills and bringing him to the UK, the couple will be keen to take out pet insurance to cover their new friend.
