30 September 2006 Company makes hypoallergenic cats
While cat insurance could save on vet bills if your pet has an illness, the problem of owners having allergic reactions to their kittens is one they have had to suffer with medication, but not any longer, according to a company that claims to have bred a hypoallergenic cat.Allergist and clinical professor Dr Sheldon Spector from UCLA performed an experiment involving blindfolded patients, complete with a control and placebo room, which Dr Sheldon claims "shows the Allerca cat has hypoallergenicity".
Dr Bernadine Cruz, a spokesperson for Allerca, said: "These cats have been naturally bred. Allerca found a naturally occurring divergence in the specific gene sequence and bred from there.
"Since it is natural, there are no long-term effects to worry about beyond natural evolution."
The company's breeding program has produced cats with an alternate version of the Fel d 1 glycoprotein present in cats' skin and saliva that is the major cause of allergic reactions in humans,
Allerca claims that of the millions of people allergic to cats around the world, a third of these are cat-owners.
The price for the hypoallergenic cats is currently $3,950 (£2,119), which includes a 12 week-old kitten, health certificates, spaying or neutering, microchip identifier, allergy tests and one year's pet insurance.
