01 December 2005 Christmas risks highlight pet insurance need
Advice for pet owners to better deal with the risks posed by the Christmas season has highlighted the need for pet insurance. Risks that may not be obvious to pet owners can include everyday items such as chocolate and other foods, but also increase with seasonal threats such as holly and mistletoe.
"Holiday plants can be hazardous to your pet's health," said Jacob D'Aniello, president of DoodyCalls, which released the advice.
"The same plants and flowers that bring holiday cheer to our homes may also present a health hazard to our pets. Holly leaves and berries may cause stomach problems and possibly death," Mr D'Aniello added.
Pet insurance may provide peace of mind for owners who are facing the sea of issues that seasonal decorations can pose; tinsel and ribbons may look pretty, but if ingested they can cause severe intestinal blockages in cats and dogs.
Advice released earlier this month warned that pet owners should check their pets are kept away from de-icers and gritting salts as these can prove poisonous for animals that ingest them accidentally.
