06 January 2006 Christmas excesses contribute to pet obesity
Christmas excesses have led to 38 per cent of pets putting on weight over the holiday period, according to one insurer. Research conducted by Halifax Pet Insurance also found that despite this weight gain, just 13 per cent of owners were planning on putting their pet on a diet.
Highlighting the need for pet insurance, the statistics are particularly worrying as obesity in animals can lead to increased vets' bills from dealing with heart complaints, arthritis and diabetes.
"Whilst a little extra affection over Christmas is fine, it's important to ensure that it doesn't set a precedent," commented Frances Wright of Halifax Pet Insurance.
"Obesity is a major cause of pet illness - which is not only costly to treat, but traumatic for both animal and owner," she added.
The insurer's research also found that one in three animals visiting vets were considered to be overweight.
