07 February 2006  Celebrities fuel cross breed growth
Cross breed dogs are becoming an increasingly popular accessory for British dog lovers, according to the Kennel Club.

"Puggles" - half pug, half beagle - are just one type of new cross breeds which have grown in popularity since celebrities across the Atlantic started buying the animals as pets.

Slyvester Stallone, Uma Thurman and Ozzy Osbourne are all said to have fuelled the rising trend in quirky dog breeds.

However, Kennel Club spokesman Phil Buckley told the BBC that owners need to be aware that pets are a serious undertaking that needs to be properly considered.

"The average life of a dog is 12 years and it will cost around £1,000 a year to pay for food, bedding and vet fees," said Mr Buckley.

"Getting a dog is not a decision that should be taken lightly. A dog should be for life, not just for fashion."

For those who choose to buy a cross breed dog pet insurance is urged to help cover the cost of vet bills.
