16 December 2005 Caution urged over pets as presents
Leading pet charity the PDSA has warned people not to give pets as presents this Christmas time without proper consideration. With responsibilities such as providing for the cost of food, shelter and pet insurance, a surprise pet could soon become an unwanted one as reality kicks in.
"Buying a pet as a surprise present will almost inevitably end in disaster," PDSA senior veterinary surgeon Elaine Pendlebury said.
"The new owner may not be prepared for how much time and responsibility is involved, how much money it will cost, and how the animal will affect their lifestyle."
Puppies and kittens are particularly demanding as they require an awful lot of training and care in the first few months of ownership.
Beyond time and effort, potential illnesses could also end up costing pet owners without cat and dog insurance hundreds of pounds.
"The decision to own a pet shouldn't be made on behalf of someone else, as the commitment can be just too much for anyone not properly prepared for pet ownership," adds the PDSA.
