21 October 2005 Cats need caring from fireworks
Leading cat welfare charity, Cats Protection, is urging all pet owners to take extra special care of their cats during the fireworks season. With Bonfire Night fast approaching, the charity is worried about the number of cases of pointlessly injured cats that occurs each year at around this time.
Cats Protection is advising cat owners, when there are fireworks outside, to make sure their cat is inside, and in an environment in which it feels secure and accustomed.
It is also important to reduce the noise coming from outside by closing windows, and providing alternative soothing sounds from within the house.
Fireworks should also be used as far away from the house as possible, to decrease the chance of cats being injured or distressed.
Beth Skillings, head of Veterinary Services at Cats Protection, commented: "Apart from the obvious physical damage by accidental or malicious contact with them, cats can be severely affected by fireworks noise and lights.
"Carrying out a few sensible precautions can help to lessen the trauma."
