10 September 2005 Cats keep older owners content
The value for older generations of owning a cat has been highlighted by a new survey commissioned by charity Cats Protection. The study of a thousand people over 55, which coincides with Cats Protection Week, shows that feline friends provide their owner with more fun, laughter and social interaction.
Owners will be keen to take out pet insurance to ensure that their cats are covered so they can continue to benefit.
Dr McNicholas, who conducted the research, commented: "We found that older people value their cats as companions, confidantes and a source of meeting others.
"Growing older can mean a degree of 'social shrinkage' in social networks. Cats can, amongst other things, help people to make friends - a factor well documented for maintaining psychological health."
Those who were aged over 70 admitted that they got out and about more often thanks to their cat, with a quarter saying they had met more people in the process.
Cats Protection Week runs from September 10th to 17th.
