19 November 2005 Cats and dogs provide 'vital' support
Companionship, love and support from pets are all widely appreciated, but what is less well known is that pets can have a significant effect on people's physiological health too. Savannah Rincones and Rebecca Eckert, both students at the University of Texas researching interdisciplinary gerontology, have argued in the El Paso Times that pets can benefit people's mental and physical well being.
In a reciprocal relationship where pet owners provide responsible ownership through shelter, food, pet insurance and love, animals can provide much in return.
"The power of pet therapy has proved not only to have an effect on mental health and the emotional well being of humans, but also to reduce high blood pressure, anxiety and stress," write Ms Rincones and Ms Eckert.
"It is well known that from birth, it is crucial for all human beings to experience touch. When there is no outlet for touching and cuddling, there can be serious negative consequences on mental health," they added.
According to the Pet Information Bureau, pets can give help people by giving them something to care for, as well as social opportunities, exercise and companionship.
