18 January 2006 Care failures lead to lifetime ban
A mother and son from Staffordshire have been banned from keeping animals for life after they were found guilty of causing unnecessary suffering to their cat. June and Dean Howell of Coulthwaite Way, Rugeley, were also fined £600 in total and given a 12-month conditional discharge.
Despite their pet's illness being easily treatable had they taken it to a vet, their cat Tyson was put down when taken in by the RSPCA as its facial abscess had reached too late a stage to treat.
Expressing her frustration at the owners' inability to seek help for the pet, RSPCA inspector Kate Garton said: "I am delighted with the lifetime ban on the keeping of all animals They chose not to ask for my help and instead allowed their cat to suffer."
Highlighting the need for pet insurance in the event of an illness that may need costly veterinary treatment, Ms Garton added: "All animal owners should be aware of their responsibilities and if their pet should become ill it must receive veterinary treatment."
