10 January 2006 Cancer screening programme launched for pets
Cats and dogs are to benefit from a new cancer screening and detection programme. PetScreen Veterinary Care has launched a screening, detection, and individualised treatment programme to target the number of deaths caused by cancer.
Selected veterinary hospitals and practices throughout the UK will use the system, benefiting those with pet insurance who will be able to afford the costly and potentially life-saving treatment.
"We are at the beginning of an exciting chapter of discovery both in terms of the knowledge and data we will accumulate and the reward of taking advanced technology to eliminate suffering in our pets," commented Dr Kevin Slater, one of the founders of PetScreen.
Under the programme, a blood 'fingerprint' is taken from the pet on a yearly basis. If detected at an early stage, cancer can then be targeted with an individualised chemotherapy service.
The impact of the treatment on the tumour is then monitored by further proteomic (blood serum) sampling.
Although certain canine breeds are known to be very prone to developing cancer, PetScreen is the first screening method of its kind.
