17 November 2006  Campaign to fight cancer in pets
While many owners will purchase cat or dog insurance to cover the cost of bills when their pet needs a trip to the vet, some will not be aware of reports of the high incidence of cancer in pets.

The Animal Cancer Foundation (ACF) in the US is selling Pet4Pets bright orange collars, with the proceeds donated to charity to help find cures and treatments for affected animals.

It quotes National Cancer Institute figures that show that six million dogs and six million cats are diagnosed with some form of cancer each year.

Dr Gerald Post, leader of the ACF, said: "We want to do all we can for our pets just as we do with the challenge of cancer in people.

"We have seen an outpouring of support from the pet industry for this mission."

Earlier this year, Halifax Pet Insurance warned owners that feeding dogs confectionary suited to humans can have long-term negative effects on a pet's health.
