24 September 2005  Brits want ASBOs for pets
New research has revealed that four in five adults would support petowners receiving an Anti-Social Behaviour Order (ASBO) if their animals misbehave.

The study, commissioned by Halifax Pet Insurance, shows that ten per cent of the population have argued, or come close to arguing, with neighbours over unruly pets.

One in four people would welcome a pet ASBO for dogs that bark long into the night or at the crack of dawn.

A similar number of people would like to see the measure applied for pets that foul on people's property or on pavements.

Another 19 per cent of people would hand out an ASBO for aggressive pets that bite and snarl.

John Bennett, head of products at Halifax Pet Insurance, said: "The research found that pet anti-social behaviour orders, or PASBOs, are seen to be an acceptable way to deal with bad behaviour."

Those who have pets that behave badly are being advised to seek help to improve the behaviour of their pets.

Dr Roger Mugford, pet psychologist at The Animal Behaviour Centre in Surrey, commented: "Animals misbehave for a reason, once you have identified the cause then the majority of problems can be solved through appropriate science-based training methods."
