06 July 2006 Brits splash millions on pets
British pet owners spend millions of pounds a year celebrating their pet's birthdays according to the latest research from Direct Line Insurance. Direct Line, which provides pet insurance for thousands of animals in Britain, found that Brits spend just over £36 million a year on celebrating their pet's birthdays.
In the survey of 1,605 dog owners, 70 per cent said they buy their dog a present when it is their birthday, 15 per cent take their dog for a special walk on an alternative route and ten per cent even give their dog a birthday card.
Chris Price, head of Direct Line Pet Insurance, said: "Some pleasures such as special extra long walkies even benefit the overall well being of the dog."
However, owners do need to be careful in how much they treat their dog:
"Although owners are acting in good faith they do need to be careful not to over-indulge their dog with sweet treats that are bad for them since this could lead to health problems and expensive visits to the vets," said Mr Price.
The average amount spent on a pet dogs birthday was £16.05.
