27 April 2006 Brits prefer pets' company
Ahead of National Pet Week, Britain's reputation as a nation of animal-lovers has been strengthened by a survey by Saga pet insurance which reports nearly half of UK pet owners treat their animals as one of their children. However, although around 40 per cent of pet owners say they prefer the company of their cat or dog to that of other people, the survey also reveals that half that number does not have pet insurance for their beloved animals.
So although a fifth of pet owners have their furry friends written into their will, around 20 per cent of cats and dogs not being looked after with pet insurance while their owners are alive.
Andrew Goodsell, chief executive, Saga, commented: "We know that, for many, the company of a beloved cat or dog can really make a difference to their quality of life. However, it's important that people seriously consider taking out insurance to cover their pet in case of an accident or illness."
National Pet Week, which will run from April 29th to May 7th, was established to promote responsible pet ownership and the value of pets for people and people for pets, raise awareness of the importance of animal health professionals and related services, and increase public awareness of the role and value of working companion animals.
