25 October 2006  Brits concerned over pet safety at bonfires
As November draws near, a survey by a pet insurance provider has revealed that many Britons are concerned for the welfare of their pets on bonfire night.

The survey by Churchill Insurance claimed that 18 per cent of households did not celebrate bonfire night due to safety concerns, while 56 per cent fear for the personal safety of family and friends and 43 per cent worry about the risks to their pets.

Martin Scott, head of home insurance at Churchill, said: "By observing a few safety precautions, the risk of accidents can be significantly reduced."

Last year, Sainsbury's Bank reported that the trauma due to fireworks costs pet owners up to £1.6 million in veterinary bills, which could result in costly cat and dog insurance claims.

David Pickett, pet insurance manager at the bank, advised homeowners to keep pets inside on bonfire night to protect them from the noise caused by fireworks.
