05 April 2007  Britons 'relying on pets for home safety'
Pet owners in the UK are opting to use their dogs to protect their home, rather than purchase technology-based security systems, it has been reported.

Financial services provider Legal & General reports that a fifth of Britons use their pet dog for home safety, while 20 per cent of these people have not installed a burglar alarm.

The firm adds that there was a 75 per cent increase in the number of stolen dogs in London during 2006.

Ruth Wilkins, head of communications at the firm, said: "These results show a concerning reliance among the British population on dogs for their personal protection as well as their home."

She added that while pets can act as a useful deterrent against burglary, they often can prove ineffective once a break-in has occurred.

Last summer, pet insurance provider Halifax advised motorists to leave their dogs at home during periods of hot weather to avoid pets being put in danger from high temperatures inside the vehicle.
