21 March 2007 British owners 'not immunising their dogs'
A dog insurance firm has warned that hundreds of thousands of dogs in Britain are falling ill as their owners are fearful of getting their pets vaccinated.Direct Line Pet Insurance reports that over 864,000 dogs in the UK have fallen sick from diseases they could have been vaccinated against contracting in the last five years, while 11 per cent of dog owners admit their pet's inoculations are not up to date.
Furthermore, four per cent of dog owners confess their pet has never been immunised, while nine per cent believe that vaccinations could make their dog ill.
Chris Price, head of Direct Line Pet Insurance, said: "Our research has found that the British public is concerned about the possible negative impact of vaccinating their pets."
He added that with one in six British dogs contracting preventable illnesses, he urged owners to consult a vet before making decisions regarding their pet's immunisation programme.
Last year, the National Office of Animal Health advised owners to ensure their dog's vaccinations are up to date to prevent against the potentially fatal parvovirus that is highly infectious.
