19 September 2006  British dogs 'under-exercised'
Dogs in the UK are not getting the weekly recommended amount of exercise, according to a survey by Halifax Pet Insurance.

The survey of 1,000 dog owners found that 81 per cent were not exercising their dogs enough, though only 15 per cent of those asked believed this was the case.

A further 69 per cent felt their dogs were getting an adequate amount of exercise, 13 per cent said that they didn't know how much exercise was appropriate for their pet and two per cent feared they were over-exercising their dogs.

Vicky Watson, products manager at Halifax Pet Insurance, said: "When choosing a dog an owner should properly research the breed to ensure that they will be able to provide it with the care and attention it needs.

"Rather than finding out whether a breed is suitable for them, they should really be asking themselves whether they are suitable owners for the breed."

The pet insurance company warned that if a dog does not receive enough exercise it can lead to health problems and a rise in veterinary expenses, with a corresponding increase in dog insurance premiums also a possibility.

In May this year Direct Line Pet Insurance warned that many dogs were receiving a human diet, which can lead to obesity and health problems in animals.
