28 February 2007  British dogs 'hit by ill health'
Pet owners in the UK may have to claim on their dog insurance for veterinary bills, as a new study reveals that British dogs are experiencing an increasing rate of health problems.

Recently published research from animal charity PDSA reports a four per cent increase in obesity in dogs to 21 per cent since 2003, while dental problems in canines have risen from 21 per cent to 27 per cent.

Elaine Pendlebury, senior veterinary surgeon at PDSA, said: "Our data confirms there is a continued need for PDSA to highlight the benefits of better pet health care and to encourage owners to take more of an interest in their pet's diet and exercise regime."

She added that instances of obesity and poor dental health were on the rise in British dogs, with both conditions being preventable in most cases.

Halifax Pet Insurance recently reported that 82 per cent of vets in the UK operate specialist clinics for overweight pets.
