25 January 2006  Ban on cat and dog fur trade under consideration
A ban on the trade of dog and cat fur is being considered by the European Commission (EC) following a worldwide campaign by Heather Mills-McCartney.

Ms Mills-McCartney has twice visited the European Parliament to protest about the practice, which she maintains is being carried out in China as well a number of European countries, reports Ireland On-line.

Responding to the high-profile campaign against the fur trade, the EC said in a statement: "The Commission is looking into ways to ban the trade of cat and dog fur in the EU, for ethical reasons and in response to considerable public concerns on this issue.

"There are many legal issues to address before such a ban could be put in place, but the Commission is hopeful that a European solution can be found in the near future," the statement added.

Evidence of a thriving dog and cat fur trade in France, Italy, Germany, Spain, Austria, the Netherlands, Belgium and Denmark has been revealed by the Humane Society International and Conservative MEP Struan Stevenson.

It is thought that an estimated two million cats and dogs are being killed in China each year to fuel the trade, in which some animals are skinned alive due to the greater expense of more humane killings.
