31 December 2005 Ban for life for cruelty couple
A Tyne and Wear couple have been banned for life for keeping an animal after they were convicted of causing their pet dog unnecessary suffering. According to the RSPCA, Keith and Rita Brown from Thorney Close in Sunderland admitted the ill-treatment, which left their tan cross-breed dog Fizz in an emaciated state and needing veterinary treatment.
When discovered by the RSPCA inspector, Fizz was tied to a makeshift kennel in the couple's back garden where she was unable to reach any food.
After being taken into care it was necessary to treat the dog for bad skin condition, fleas and worms. She weighed just 13.8 kilogrammes.
As well as the life time ban, Mr and Mrs Brown were also given a two-year conditional discharge and ordered to pay costs of £225.
Although the high price of veterinary costs, leading many to purchase pet insurance, may deter people from adequately looking after their animals, the ruling highlights the ramifications of not doing so.
