08 February 2006  Bach helps to soothe stressed out dogs
Pet owners worried about their dogs being stressed could help by playing them classical music.

An RSPCA centre in Somerset has installed a £2,000 sound system to play soothing music in order to calm the dogs.

According to staff at the centre the dogs are most appeased by Bach and Mozart, but the pounding beats of pop and dance music has been found to only distress them even more.

"It definitely works. It's quieter in the kennels now because if one dog barks when it's quiet they all start but if music's playing they don't," commented Anita Clark, the centre's deputy manager.

"Music is proven to have a calming effect on both animals and people. What relaxes them is the same as the kind of classical music that relaxes people, I suppose," Ms Clark added.

For owners concerned about their pets, cat and dog insurance can provide year-round piece of mind, although the RSPCA's music initiative illustrates the type of care owners can provide on a daily basis.
