01 November 2005 Avoid giving pets a fright this Halloween
Pet owners are being warned to keep their animals clear of Halloween treats. Experts believe that careless behaviour amongst pet owners around the festive season could prove hazardous for domestic animals if they get their paws on treats not intended for them.
Chocolate and sweets, which generally cause a bad reaction if eaten by animals, can also result in ill effects if wrappers are not disposed of carefully, United Press International reports. A cat or dog could easily choke on a chocolate wrapper or lollipop stick, or be cut by foil packaging.
Comprehensive pet insurance is essential in the event of such incidences occurring.
"Many pet owners like to include their dog or cat in their Halloween celebrations," said Iams veterinarian, Dan Carey.
"Sadly, in the process, many owners do their four-legged friends a great disservice by giving them rich, non-nutritional treats."
Mr Carey also recommends bringing outdoor pets inside on "trick-or-treat" night, to avoid mischief-makers causing harm to the animals or releasing them from their cages.
Pet owners are also reminded that nervous or aggressive animals should be kept away from children and locked indoors to avoid being distressed by fireworks on bonfire night.
