Australian pet owners may be seeing their vets more often now that research has revealed they have some of the fattest pets. According to the country's RSPCA, animals down under are following in the footsteps of their obese owners and increasingly overeating.
It is perhaps a common misconception that Australia is a country of fit and healthy people. Figures show that it is fast catching up to the United States in terms of its obesity levels.
With 62 per cent of Australian men and 45 per cent of women now classed as overweight or obese, it is hardly surprising that their pets are becoming dangerously plump too.
The RSPCA told Reuters that between 40 and 44 per cent of the country's dogs are overweight as a result of bad diet and lack of exercise, making them more vulnerable to diabetes, arthritis, heart problems and liver disease.
For the owners of these chubby creatures, taking out pet insurance could be a wise move. In the event of illness or injury pet insurance can help with the cost of vets bills and medicines.
