29 December 2006  Aussie cat saves family from house fire
While some pet owners may pick up cat insurance out of concern for any injury their pet may pick up in accidents in the home, one Australian feline took the lead itself in an emergency situation by waking its owners and saving their lives.

Reports state that the fire was believed to have been started by a lit cigarette left in the home.

Robert White-MacFarlane, acting station officer at Cairns Fire Station, told ABC radio: "The occupant was woken by the household cat which was scratching his face, alerting [him] to the ensuing dangers."

The Courier Mail reports that the ten-week old cat woke up Zacheri Richardson-Leitman, 14, when his foam mattress caught alight.

The cat, named Tinny, had been given to seven-year old Chaneice by her mother Marina for Christmas, the newspaper added.

Earlier this year, pet insurance provider Churchill revealed that 3.2 million homes suffer incidents including fire, flood or burglary every year.
