30 December 2005  Animal welfare concerns realised
Despite all the pre-Christmas warnings that pets are not just for the festive period, Boxing Day saw a large number of animals thrown out with the rubbish.

One dogs home in Northern Ireland has been left struggling to cope following an unprecedented influx of puppies being dumped at its doors following Christmas Day.

The Dogs Trust Rehoming Centre in Ballymena has seen so many dogs arrive since Christmas Day that it is now finding it difficult to properly look after them all and is calling on the public to come to its help by taking some of the poor pooches off its hands.

It is a sight that is seen over and over across the country every year, as animals bought for children for Christmas quickly become unwanted by the recipients and are then thrown out by parents unwilling to look after the pet themselves.

Pet insurance could provide one way of reducing the number of people who treat pets in this way, as making them think about pet insurance could help them realise the long-term financial commitment that looking after an animal requires.
