10 December 2005 Americans in puppy love
Choosing a dog can be as important as finding the perfect man or woman, according to research carried out by Pedigree on American dog owners. Cat and dog insurance has never been so vital for protecting what is evidently an important member of many people's family, as the study found that nearly 60 per cent of respondents said they were as fussy about choosing their perfect dog as they were at choosing their partner.
"Pedigree recognises the unique relationship that owners have with their dogs and appreciates the variety of ways they choose to express their love for their canine companions, from buying them lavish gifts to allowing them to enjoy activities typically reserved for humans," said Rob Leibowitz, marketing director of Dog Portfolio, Masterfoods USA.
Over half of those surveyed admitted that they allowed their dog to sleep on their beds with them while a quarter said that they let their dog eat off their plates. Just under half admitted that they regarded themselves as the dog's 'mummy' or 'daddy' and viewed owning a pet as a dry run to having children.
