16 September 2005 Advice given for pets in public
Veterinary charity PDSA has produced a new leaflet to urge pet owners to clean up after their dog in public, and to check the health of their dogs regularly. The 'Dogs Consideration for Others' advice helps explain how to look after your pet, and how to carry out a worming regime, for example.
PDSA senior veterinary surgeon Elaine Pendlebury said: "We have not only produced this leaflet in an effort to ensure that parks and pathways are left clean but also to raise awareness of the very serious health issues associated with dog mess."
It is possible for diseases such as Toxocara to be spread by dog faeces, a parasitic worm that can lead to human blindness.
The leaflet also concentrates on how to ensure your dog's behaviour does not get out of control.
Ms Pendlebury commented: "Dogs are an important part of many people's lives but a disobedient or destructive dog can become a nuisance and even a danger to other people or animals.
"Dog ownership includes making sure that other people aren't offended, affected or scared by your dog's behaviour."
