23 December 2005 'A pet is for life' advice ignored
As numerous people forget to listen to their 'a pet is for life' advice, the RSPCA has released some of the more incredulous reasons why people have abandoned their animals. Going beyond the tenets of basic care such as providing food, shelter and pet insurance, the list of excuses shows a worrying lack of awareness of the level of responsibility that owning a pet involves.
"My cat doesn't match the new carpet" and "I'm going on holiday" are just some of the reasons that people have given the RSPCA for abandoning their pets.
Other owners have given up on their animals for not being playful and outgoing enough.
"Some of the excuses we've highlighted show a complete lack of understanding about the responsibilities of owning an animal," commented Tim Miles, RSPCA chief veterinary officer.
"The RSPCA urges anyone taking on a pet to seriously consider the implications and the commitment, time and finances needed to care for that pet for the rest of its life," he added.
During the first 12 days of December this year the RSPCA received 492 calls relating to abandoned animals.
